There is no doubt that flying with Bangkok Airways from Bangkok to Koh Samui is the easiest way to reach this beautiful island. However, the situation is not that straightforward, so let’s dive a bit deeper. Koh Samui, Thailand’s second-largest island after Phuket, is undoubtedly one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. While some might be tempted to label it as one of Thailand’s most beautiful islands, doing so might overlook the sheer diversity of stunning, paradise-like islands that this country offers. Ranking them feels subjective, as each island presents its unique allure. The best way to experience Thailand’s island beauty is to visit as many as possible and witness firsthand the stunning landscapes this incredible country has to offer.
However, for many travelers, reaching Koh Samui can be a bit of a challenge due to the high costs of direct flights. The reason behind these elevated prices lies in the fact that the island’s airport is privately owned by Bangkok Airways, which, due to its monopoly, can maintain high ticket prices while keeping low-cost carriers like AirAsia, VietJet Air, or Thai Lion Air from using the airport.
A typical one-way ticket from Bangkok to Koh Samui costs around $130 USD (approximately 4,500 baht), although it’s possible to find deals below $100 USD during promotions. These prices often push travelers to consider a more complex alternative: flying a budget airline from Bangkok to Surat Thani for around $30-40 USD, followed by a bus and ferry or catamaran journey to Koh Samui, which adds another $10-15 USD. For families, this price difference can be substantial, even though the journey becomes more complicated and adds 4-5 extra hours of travel time. We initially booked this more affordable route, but when our Thai Lion Air flight was postponed, we were forced to seek an alternative solution (we’re still waiting for a refund, by the way). In the end, we decided to opt for a direct flight with Bangkok Airways, and we were glad we did. Although we paid a bit more, we secured the quickest connection, enjoyed a pleasant experience with the airline, and had a smooth, peaceful flight to the island.
Upon arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport, we encountered minimal wait times at the Bangkok Airways check-in counter. The process was efficient and quick, allowing us to proceed smoothly to the domestic departures area. On all Bangkok Airways economy flights, passengers can check luggage up to 20 kilograms, with an additional 7 kilograms for carry-on. What’s particularly great is that the airline combines the baggage allowance across passengers, so for our group of eight, we had a collective limit of 160 kilograms, regardless of how much weight was in each suitcase.
One standout feature of flying with Bangkok Airways is that even economy class passengers have access to their lounge. While it doesn’t quite match the luxury of business or first-class lounges, it’s an excellent perk that earned the airline a big plus from us.
In the lounge, you can sample a few Thai specialties, enjoy a sandwich or dessert, and help yourself to coffee, tea, a variety of juices, or water.
We spent an hour relaxing in the lounge before heading to our gate. The plane departed on time, and we were greeted by probably the most beautiful flight attendants of all our flights during this Southeast Asia trip. Despite the flight lasting just an hour, we were served a full lunch, which was quite tasty.
After a little over an hour in the air, we landed in Koh Samui, where the island’s unique open-air airport, set in a tropical environment, instantly lifted our spirits and ushered us into vacation mode. The atmosphere at the airport, with its lush greenery and relaxed vibe, is a perfect introduction to the island’s laid-back charm.
In conclusion, our flight with Bangkok Airways was an incredibly pleasant experience, and we’ll definitely choose the same route next time, avoiding unnecessary complications. Although the cost might be higher compared to budget options, the convenience, service, and overall experience made it well worth it. Sometimes, paying a bit more for ease and comfort is the best decision, especially when it leads you directly to a tropical paradise like Koh Samui.
